本課程參與「教育部現代公民核心能力課程計畫」中之「核心素養融入專業」部分。
除以上所列之外，本課程從以下的課程理念出發：

1. 重視人文基本價值，身分認同的審視，美學素養的反思
2. 開放多元的態度與作法，並堅持批判精神，強調另類與他者的向度
3. 善用理論來開拓思維的深度，打破意識型態的限制
4. 創意的強調，求新求變，具體發揮美學素養與文化能力
5. 本課程融合同一性與異質性，理論與實踐，在課程中設定學生分組發展理念的實作，應用閱讀所學切入文化與美學現象，具體分析，全班討論

本課程因此關心公民核心能力的建立，尤其是公民素養中的美學素養。
我們要得到的，是以批判性的文化研究為基礎的反思：

1. 以美學為基礎，探索自我，反思自我與「他者」的權力關係
2. 從美學與文化的場域，重新理解性別、族群、階級問題，朝向平等的社會
3. 學習異質的價值，打開社會的封閉性，接納他者，朝向多元的未來
4. 擴大公民美學領域的接觸面，放寬視野，走入藍海世界
5. 解構傳統上美學與科學的對立，重新定義美學/文化與科技的意義與界線
6. 從美學素養延伸到倫理、民主、科學、媒體（傳播/溝通）等其他核心素養

（＊請注意：本課程討論有趣而且具批判性的議題，但並非適合所有的同學。對文化的權力關係感興趣，對文學與文化理論有心得，以及英文能力好的同學而言，我們的課可以給你很多。不然，如果你不喜歡深入探索問題，或英文閱讀與書寫能力有限，請勿進入你無法處理的狀況。）

文學論述是文化實踐的一種，形塑我們的身份認同。但是我們的文化活動不止限於經過典律化的文學。廣大的文化領域，包括電影、電視、廣告、時尚、言情小說、流行音樂、網際網路等等，都在建構和改變我們的主體位置。

本課程將透過多重切角，觀察文化論述和權力部置的關係：從恐怖片裡的吸血鬼、狼人、異形等等怪物（怪物為什麼怪呢？），看性別/性取向問題的暗示與隱藏；從瘦身減肥，看女性身體受到的權力控制；從觀影結構，分析電影「看」的角度，如何建構男女差異，調節慾望關係；主流好萊塢電影怎麼宰制並製造我們的樂趣;；從愛情小說看女性的行動力；流行服飾如何結合消費社會價值與性別政治；國族如何在文化再現與共同習俗的創造中組裝起來；廣告意象也會呈現帝國主義的種族意識型態；在網路的虛擬空間，身體感官是否存在；還有女同性戀多種形象的不同意義，流行音樂與身份認同，及其他議題。課程閱讀的範圍將是多樣而有趣的。

我們也會分辨文學研究與文化研究的異同；在對象的選擇、方法、意識型態、還有社會階級、文化權力各方面，有何不同？我們為什麼需要文化研究？它能帶來什麼？

請注意：本課程裡的閱讀，受當代理論影響很深。上學期上過我教的《文學理論與文化批評：從柏拉圖到酷兒》的同學，已有良好理論基礎，歡迎參加現象的分析。缺乏理論訓練的同學，如果對認識文化實踐的力量有興趣，也很歡迎（先來看看現象，以後再去唸理論）。

It is the attempt of this course to provide adavnced students with access to a variety of contemporary critical methods and examples of critiques in cultural studies. Based on the traditions of modern critical theory (from Freud to Foucault) and the development of contemporry literary studies (from feminist criticism to postcolonial studies and queer theory), cultural studies aims to reach beyond literary works to the intersections between social structures and cultural representations. In this survey course we will read a rich cluster of well-chosen practices/issues, ranging from the management of women's bodies, representations of vampires/monsters/aliens, cinematic spectatorship, romance novels and films, advertisements, invention of traditions, gender and nation, fashion, representation of lesbian bodies, masculinity, popular music, to the questions of identity and body in cyberspace etc. It is hoped that through the readings and class discussion of these instances students can develop a critical sense in their interpretation of the world around them. [For students of literature the course on Cultural Studies may help them to apply their training and literary knowledge to the understanding of the wider system of cultural constructions and social conflicts.]

另外，本課程以「人」與「人文」的基本價值為核心，以文化實踐以及文化議題為切入點，提供知識論述場域探討現代公民的「身分認同」以及其核心能力。由於文化領域屬於廣義的美學範疇，本課程意在培養具有批判性的「美學素養」。

本課程是英文系的進階跨領域課程（一直都有跨系所或跨校的優秀同學選修），以文學論述以及文學訓練為本，從美學素養出發。但重點是超出文學再現的限制，深入廣大的文化實踐領域，探討身分、性別、論述等基本「人」的議題，也是現代公民的基本議題。

本課程是進階課程，強調專業與深度，但是在同時，我們更注重專業能力與現代公民基本能力之間的融通，以基本素養為根本，以專業深入為延伸，以批判精神為目標。

Course Requirements:
1. Weekly pre-class readings and preparation attendance and participation in class discussion are indispensable. 2. Students will team up to present the results of their discussion in scheduled class meetings. 3. A mid-term exam and a term paper on an approved topic.
